American Biogas Council Announces the Eight Fastest Growing Biogas Businesses

03/2021

WASHINGTON – Today, the American Biogas Council announced the eight fastest growing biogas businesses in the US: DMT, DVO, Inc., Envitec Biogas, Evonik, Greenlane Biogas, Nacelle, Paques Environmental Technologies, and PlanET Biogas. Results were determined by gross revenue growth from 2019 to 2020. Collectively, revenue from the fastest eight grew by more than 300%.

“Biogas industry growth has been driven recently by a couple strong policies plus the desire to decarbonize our gas sector, reduce agriculture emissions and provide reliable renewable energy,” said Bernard Sheff, PE, chair of the American Biogas Council Board of Directors. “But we will see even stronger growth when, as a society, we recognize the imperative to recycle our organic waste. Biogas systems can do something that fossil fuels, wind, and solar can’t: reduce landfill waste by recycling all the organic waste that makes up one-quarter to one-third of all garbage.”

At present, the US biogas industry has 2,200 operating projects in all 50 states. Biogas systems recycle organic material into renewable energy and soil products. Because each year the US generates millions of tons of manure, agricultural waste and food scraps, plus billions of gallons of wastewater every day, the potential to build new biogas systems to manage those large volumes of organic waste is enormous. At least 15,000 new systems could be built, catalyzing an estimated $45 billion in new capital deployment along with 374,000 short-term construction jobs to build the new systems and 25,000 permanent jobs to operate them. This number of systems could produce enough energy to power 7.5 million American homes and reduce emissions equivalent to removing up to 15.4 million passenger vehicles from the road, in addition to many other benefits.

Nacelle Solutions to operate and maintain two new RNG facilities in Wisconsin

10/2020

Charleston, WV — Representatives of Nacelle Solutions announced that two renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities in Wisconsin — S&S Jerseyland Dairy in Sturgeon Bay and Dallmann East River Dairy in Brillion — have been completed and began operations earlier this summer. Nacelle will own, operate and maintain the RNG processing equipment under a long-term service contract for U.S. Gain.

Nacelle Solutions, a provider of gas conditioning technologies and service for the energy and biogas industries, partnered with U.S. Gain, a leader in the development and distribution of RNG for the transportation and thermal energy markets, on both projects. The S&S and Dallmann facilities are the second and third completed projects from the Nacelle and U.S. Gain partnership; with each project they expedite time to market and consistently maximize methane recovery.

Nacelle led the design, engineering, construction and commissioning of both facilities. Projects like these typically take 12 to 18 months to bring online — these projects were completed in eight months despite environmental variables and other challenges. This was due in large part to the company’s decades of experience in gas processing and utilization of an experienced and reliable vendor base.

“Completing a project like this in just eight months, especially during a global pandemic, shows how committed and focused our team is,” said Nacelle co-founder, Gov Graney. “We’re exceptionally proud of how efficient and streamlined this process is becoming — and it will only continue to improve.”

Nacelle’s equipment utilizes a variety of technologies to safely transform biogas into clean low-carbon fuel, meet pipeline specifications and compress the fuel for U.S. Gain to transport and dispense it for use by many organizations. This streamlined process enables reliable speed to market and maximization of methane recovery. Nacelle’s equipment produces up to 99.5% pure RNG.

RNG provides several benefits to the environment and the economy, as well as our communities. Dairy-based RNG features low carbon-intensity scores, which means a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and increased domestic energy security. RNG also provides new revenue sources for American farmers and more jobs in rural areas.

“Nacelle Solutions has been instrumental to the success of these projects,” said Mike Koel, President of U.S. Gain. “As organizations further prioritize sustainability, demand for RNG as an alternative fuel and thermal energy continues to climb. As a result, we’ll bring more agricultural-based RNG to market, with support of key providers like Nacelle Solutions. RNG truly is a win-win for all involved, benefitting rural and urban communities across the nation.”

In addition, the S&S Jerseyland Dairy facility recently obtained project certification from the California Air Resources Board and the Environmental Protection Agency.

U.S. Gain Develops Dairy RNG Project in Just 8 Months

06/2020

Appleton, Wis., June 29, 2020

U.S. Gain, a leader in development, procurement and distribution of renewable natural gas (RNG), proudly announces that after only eight months their digester at S&S Jerseyland Dairy in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin is now transforming animal waste to clean, low carbon fuel for the transportation market.

“We’re pleased to add this project to our RNG development portfolio and in such a short amount of time,” said Mike Koel, President of U.S. Gain. “As organizations continue the shift from fossil-based products to renewables, the demand for RNG as an alternative fuel and thermal energy continues to climb. We’re excited to be involved in so many dairy-based RNG development projects because of the multitude of benefits brought to rural and urban communities across the nation.”

The anaerobic digester at S&S Jerseyland Dairy has been operational since 2011, initially converting waste from the farm’s 4,000 herd of Jersey cows to renewable power. U.S. Gain purchased the farm’s digester in September of 2019 and made the upgrades needed for fuel production. Gas collected at the facility is taken through a complex processing system that results in RNG comprised of 99.5% methane. The facility recently obtained project certification from the California Air Resources Board, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency. Typically, projects like these take 12 to 18 months to bring online. “We are  proud to announce its completion much sooner than anticipated,” Koel said.

A key partner to U.S. Gain throughout the project was Nacelle Solutions, a leader in developing gas clean-up equipment specifically designed for the RNG industry. “We are pleased to announce this project maximizes methane recovery and speed to market – two key goals initially outlined by U.S. Gain and Nacelle,” said Nacelle’s Co-Founder, Gov Graney.

“Methane recovery was maximized through additional processing capabilities in the upgrade portion of the plant, specifically a third stage membrane process. The more plants we do, the more efficient and streamlined we become, enabling speed to market with reliable results,” explained Graney.

RNG produced at S&S Jerseyland Dairy is transported to U.S. Gain’s new decant facility, then injected into the pipeline and transmitted to organizations throughout the nation seeking low carbon solutions to satisfy their sustainability targets.

RNG production begins at Clover Hill Dairy, Nacelle Solutions to operate and maintain facility

04/2020

Campbellsport, WI - Officials with Nacelle Solutions have announced that renewable natural gas (RNG) production is now underway at Clover Hill Dairy in Campbellsport, Wisconsin.

Nacelle partnered with U.S. Gain, a leader in the development and distribution of renewable natural gas, to start the Clover Hill RNG processing facility. The facility upgrades biogas produced from an existing digester located onsite. Nacelle’s equipment utilizes a variety of technologies to safely upgrade the biogas to RNG, meet pipeline specifications, and compress the gas to be transported to an offsite injection point where U.S. Gain will dispense into the transportation market.

Using technology to safely remove hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and other contaminates from biogas to produce RNG is not new. However, the Clover Hill facility is unique in that Nacelle led the design, engineering, construction, and commissioning of the facility where RNG production began at full capacity in less than nine months. This was due in large part to the company’s decades of experience in gas processing and utilization of an experienced and reliable vendor base. Nacelle will own, operate and maintain the RNG processing equipment under a long-term service contract for U.S. Gain.

“What is most important to Nacelle for this project is the alignment of our interests with both U.S. Gain and the Bonlenders [farm owners],” said Gov Graney, Nacelle’s co-founder. “Having worked closely together through various phases of the project development lifecycle it’s a highlight for us to see this strategic alignment come together, produce results, and meet expectations.”

“Nacelle has been an incredible partner on the Clover Hill Dairy project,” said Mike Koel, President of U.S. Gain. “This is the first opportunity we’ve had to work with Nacelle on an RNG development project. Given complexities that often surface during dairy developments, we’re extremely proud to see Clover Hill Dairy begin gas production on time and within budget. This is a huge accomplishment for the industry, and of course all involved.”

Nacelle hired locally for the construction and management of daily operations at the Clover Hill facility. Nacelle is working with U.S. Gain on additional RNG projects in Wisconsin, which officials expect to be operational in the next several months creating additional longterm jobs.

“We’re going to continue to replicate this model,” said Graney. “And we’re excited about the economic and environmental benefits this technology can bring to local communities.”

“Nacelle has been a strategic partner for our farm,” said Joe Bonlender. “We now have an additional income stream with plans for the future, as well as environmental benefits like less noise pollution (from generators), cleaner air, and less odor. Nacelle has been a welcome and respectful steward at Clover Hill.”
